1) Never Ride Against Traffic
Ride with the traffic. It’s safer and in some states riding against traffic is illegal
2) Ride as far right as possible
When you ride, try to do so as far right as possible. Motorists must respect you and you must respect motorists; they have the big bulky four-wheel machines, remember? They need most of that road.
3) Stop at ALL stop lights and red stop signs
Cyclist have to obey the same laws as motorists. Just as you would in a motor vehicle, please STOP (ALL THE WAY) at stop lights and stop signs.
4) Use Hand Signals When Turning
When turning left, extend your left arm straight out to the left of you. When turning right, extend the left arm and bend your arm at the elbow 90 degrees up. These signals are what you would also use in a motor vehicle, should the turn signals stop functioning.
5) At night time, use lights such as LEDs
These will help drivers spot you in the dark.
As bicyclists, we must adhere to many of the same rules of the road as motor vehicles. If we want to be respected, we must show respect and vice-versa. Not only does this put us in a positive image, it keeps all of us SAFE and riding for a long, long time.
So get out there, be respectful and mindful of the road and other road-users, be safe and have fun!
